Facial cleansers and peeling gels

In my first entry, in PL and EN, (for the Kosmetyczne Skarby series over at Hexxana's blog, sorry in Polish only) about my cleansing routine, I listed all the oils I'm currently using to clean my face. I also mentioned that my oil cleansing is followed by a proper wash using a "traditional" face wash product.

And this being Japan, that product is normally some kind of face wash foam. Long, long time ago, I listened to all the hype and tried a few fancy soaps. Black soap, Aleppo soap, god-only-knows-what soap. While it might work for some people, it certainly didn't work for me. My skin became very dry and very breakout prone, more so than usual.

And so, my lesson learned, I returned to the wonderland of Asian face washes.

My first forays into the face foam territory were very much hit or miss. I used what my mother in law was using, and disliked it intensely. Her skin was a lot tougher than mine. And her wallet a lot deeper than mine.

Kiedys tam, hen, dawno temu, na fali zachwytow nad czarnymi mydlami, Aleppo cudami i bukwiczymjeszcze, probowalam tych wszystkich wynalazkow, jakby moje zycie od tego zalezalo. I choc z pewnoscia sprawdzaja sie one u tysiecy kobiet, niestety u mnie nie. Wysuszyly mi skore na wior, a co za tym idzie, stala sie ona bardzo podatna na podraznienia, wysypy i inne najazdy nieprzyjaciol.


I tak to, po pierwszej lekcji w myciu twarzy zaliczonej, z podkulonym ogonem wrocilam do krainych azjatyckich pianek do twarzy.
Moje pierwsze doswiadczenia byly bardzo rozne - od bardzo zlych, po bardzo dobre. Z racji tego, gdzie mieszkalismy, uzywalam tych samych produktow jak moja tesciowa i znienawidzilam ich serdecznie. Jej skora byla duzo bardziej wytrzymala niz moja, i jej portfel duzo bardziej zasobny niz moj.

Potem, idac za rekomendacjami roznych kolezanek, siegnelam po sprawdzone drogeryjne faworyty, takie jak Perfect Whip (Shiseido), rozne pianki Biore czy Softymo (Kose). Niektore byly fajne, inne mniej, a niektore okazaly sie totalnymi niewypalami (jak wlasnie ten oslawiony Perfect Whip, ktory to niby jest dobry dla kazdego).

A co bylo z nimi nie tak?
Nie byly wystarczajaco delikatne dla mojej cery.
Lubie miec czysta twarz. To czego nie lubie to uczucie tej skrzypiacej, napietej, wysuszonej skory, ktora az blaga o nawilzenie. Dla mnie takie uczucie to tortura. Moja twarz az krzyczala o lotion i krem.

Then, going by the recommendations of my various friends, I reached for the tried and true drugstore fare such as Perfect Whip (Shiseido), different Biore products or Softymo (Kose). Some were OK (Softymo Whitening, or Biore Acne), but just barely, some were total duds (like Perfect Whip that supposedly works for everybody).

What was wrong with them?
They were not gentle enough.
I like my skin clean. What I don't like is that tight, squeaky feeling that if not moisturized immediately, transforms into a dry skin torture. I could literally feel my skin screaming for moisture.

And then, during some school event, one of my co-workers brought a face cleansing foam by Panna Pompa. The name got me intrigued (in Polish it means "Miss Pump") and I asked if I could try it.

Reszte juz znacie.
Znalazlam moj ulubiony "zmywacz" do twarzy. Ta pianka jest niesamowicie delikatna i nie wysusza nic a nic. I czysci bardzo dokladnie i starannie. Pozostalosci olejowe sa dokladnie zmyte, a moja skora jest czysta, miekka, i jakby to okreslic... jedrna? Zero wysuszenia. Zero napiecia, zero poirytowania, zero nieprzyjemnego odczucia. Ideal? Byc moze. Ale to nie znaczy, ze zaprzestane szukania czegos lepszego, czegos nowego, bo to taka moja babska dolegliwosc.

Uzywam czerwonej Panny wieczorem do zmycia resztek oleju z twarzy i bialej Panny rano, pod prysznicem. To takie moje patriotyczne kombo.

And the rest is history.
I found my favorite face cleanser. The foam is super very gentle and not drying at all. And yet it does clean everything off my face. All oil residue is removed and my skin is left clean, soft and supple. No dry feeling whatsoever. No irritation, no discomfort. 
But hey, I'm a woman, that doesn't mean that I won't look for something better, right? I'm always eager to try new face wash products.

I use Panna Pompa Cleansing (red bottle) foam in the evening, to wash off any leftover oil residue, and Panna AHA Morning Face Soap, as the name suggests, in the morning. And that's my very patriotic (white and red, ok, ok, I know it's more pink than red, but hey, still cute) Panna Pompa combo.

Oprocz wlasciwosci czyszczacych, jest jeszcze jedno, co bardzo lubie jesli chodzi o Panne Pompe. A mianowicie to, ze ich pianka jest juz piankowa. Naciskasz na pompke i po klopocie. Kocham to rozwiazanie, bo mam dwie lewe rece jesli chodzi o robienie pianki z cleanserow o kremowej konsystencji przy uzyciu siatki. Oczywiscie posiadam i kremowe cleansery, ale wole po prostu wygode gotowej pianki.

One other thing I like about Panna Pompa products is the fact that their foam is use-ready. You simply push the pump and voila. Any idiot can do it. Which is a great relief for me, because I truly suck at making foam by using a foam net. So even though I do have some cream type foam cleansers, where you have to make the foam yourself, I am not a fan of this system. I much prefer to simply push the dispenser and get a blob of foam ready to be used.

And speaking of creamy cleansers, here are some that I currently have and use.

Hada Labo Tamagohada z AHA i BHA to produkt kultowy.
Osobiscie uwazam to za wielkie nieporozumienie, bo to bardzo przecietna pianka. Ale marketing jednak robi swoje. Czysci dobrze i pan domu bardzo ja lubi. To chyba jego ulubiony produkt do mycia twarzy. Dla mnie jest za ostry. Wysusza nieprzecietnie! Skora az boli po umyciu. Ale to moze w mojej sytuacji, bo mam wrazliwa cere.
Wiec czy w ogole uzywam tej pianki? Tak! Na ramiona. Dlaczego? Bo mam tam problem z keratosis pilaris, czyli ze skora, ktora wyglada jak u oskubanego kurczaka. Ale Tamagohada i zelowy peeling ida w ruch, i przypadlosc jest teraz niewidoczna.

Hada Labo Tamagohada with AHA and BHA is a cult favorite.
I'd rate it as barely average. I keep it in the shower room and use it from time to time when my skin can take a bit of extra stress. It does clean wonderfully and the man of the house likes it very much. I'd say it's his favorite face cleanser. Actually, to be honest, I use it on my upper arms a lot. Why? I have a bad case of chicken skin (keratosis pilaris) there, and Tamagohada plus one of my enzymatic peeling gels keep this condition under control.

DiorSnow White Reveal Gentle Purifying Foam bylo prezentem do wiekszych diorowskich zakupow. Sama bym na ta pianke kasy nie wydala. Choc teraz moge smialo powiedziec, ze to swietny cleanser dla skory wrazliwej i delikatnej. Choc moze ciut wysuszajacy dla bardzo suchej. Z tych trzech na zdjeciu to moj ulubieniec o kremowej konsystencji.

DiorSnow White Reveal Gentle Purifying Foam was something I didn't plan on buying. Luckily, I got it as a free gift with purchase. It's a very nice creamy cleanser, and I suppose if you have tons of cash to burn, it's a good choice for delicate and sensitive skin. I guess I would have to say that though it's still a bit drying for me, it's the best of my current creamy bunch.

Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Cleansing Foam rowniez byla prezentem do wiekszych shiseidowskich zakupow. Jak to w przypadku pianek Shiseido, jest ciut ostra i daje uczucie takiej skrzypiacej, napietej skory. Zaczelam uzywac jej zima i nie bylam zadowolona. Zostala oddelegowana do mycia innych czesci ciala, ktore potrzebowaly troche skrzypienia i napiecia (hihihi). Ale teraz, w lecie, kiedy nawet moja super sucha twarz ocieka potem na koncu dnia, daje tej piance kolejna szanse na buzi. W umiarkowaniu.

Shiseido White Lucent Brightening Cleansing Foam was also a gift with purchase. As all Shiseido cleansers, it's on the harsher side and leaves that squeaky clean, tight feeling. I started to use it on my face in winter and then quickly relegated it to other body parts. But now, in summer, when my face gets super hot and sweaty, it has returned to my graces. I'm using it on my face again. But in moderation.

Oprocz pianek (tych gotowych i tych kremowych "zrob to sam"), sa tutaj rowniez cleansery w proszku. Wiele osob nazywa je "peelingami", ale uwazam, ze to nie jest dobrym odzwierciedleniem produktu. Dlaczego? Bo przy uzyciu siatki do robienia pianki, mozna przemienic je w pianki wlasnie. Ja az tak sie nie wysilam, bo:
a. len ze mnie, i
b. przy dodaniu odrobinki wody i energicznym potarciu w raczkach, zamieniaja sie w kremowa maz, ktora myje rownie dobrze.

In addition to foam (both ready made and creamy types), there are also powder washes here. Some people call them "peels" but that's a misnomer. Using a foam net you can turn this powder into a blob of foam. I don't like to do it, because:
a. I'm simply too lazy, and
b. when softened with water and turned into a soggy goo, they cleanse just as well.

Choc reklamowane jako enzymatyczne cleansery, to te oslawione enzymy sa na samym koncu listy skladnikow. Ja uzywam tych proszkow glownie dla wygody.

Nie jestem jakas szalona fanka Suisai Beauty Clear Powder (Kanebo), choc przyznam sie, ze pomysl indywidualnych kostek jest swietny - nie daje ci to okazji do rozwalenia calej butli proszku na wlasnej osobie, jak i na umywalce w lotniskowej toalecie (tak, uzywam ich glownie przy podrozach). Ale jednak wole proszek Det Clear.

Though touted as enzymatic cleansers, the fruit enzymes are at the very end of their ingredient lists. I use these cleansers mainly for convenience.
I'm not a huge fan of Suisai Beauty Clear Powder (Kanebo), though the idea of single shots of powder is great - it saves you from spilling half the bottle all over yourself and the airport sink (yes, I use them mainly for travel), I still prefer Det Clear. That's just my very subjective opinion.

Det Clear Bright & Peel Fruits Enzyme Powder Wash przez chyba dwa lata z rzedu byl wybierany jako najlepszy japonskich cleanser do twarzy przez bardzo powazany portal @Cosme. Taka rekomendacja przez @Cosme natychmiastowo winduje profil marki i sprawia, ze nagle wszyscy za nia szaleja.
Ale to nie @Cosme sprawilo, ze siegnelam po Det Clear, a moja pani dermatolog. Kiedy zaczelam terapie hormonalna, moja skore szlag trafil. Nie bylo mnie stac na ekskluzywne medyczne cuda kosmetyczne. Wiec pani derma zasugerowala Det Clear. I nadal nie wiem dlaczego ten produkt jest tak szalenie popularny w Japonii.
Fakt, to delikatny cleanser, nie wysusza, zostawia skore gladziutka i czysciutka. Choc niby zawiera AHA i BHA, to nie podraznia tak jak Hada Labo Tamagohada. Roznica jest niesamowita.

Det Clear Bright & Peel Fruits Enzyme Powder Wash has been voted as the best facial cleanser a couple of years in a row by the very influential @Cosme internet portal. A recommendation by @Cosme can very well make or break a brand. But oddly enough, it wasn't @Cosme that made me go out and buy it, but my dermatologist. You see, when I started my hormone therapy, my skin bore the brunt of the unpleasant side effects. And I couldn't afford fancy, doctor formulated, medicated cleansing products. My doc suggested I try something simple, like Det Clear. And so I did. And while I still don't see why it has become so hugely popular in Japan, I must say that on those problematic skin days, it's a very nice, easy, non-drying (bonus points for that), effective cleanser. It leaves my face clean, incredibly smooth and not screaming for moisture. Which is surprising, considering that it contains AHA and BHA. What a stark difference to Hada Labo's Tamagohada!

Wiec jesli nie przeszkadzaja ci tandetne opakowania produktow Det Clear, to dobrze. Bo w srodku sa swietne kosmetyki.

Once you can get past Det Clear's tacky packaging design, you'll discover that inside those cheap looking bottles there are some really good skin care products.

A skoro jestesmy w temacie Det Clear, to nie mozna nie wspomniec o ich swietnych zelach peelingujacych. Mam dwa.
Moja przygoda z zelami enzymatycznymi zaczela sie od House of Rose. Robil cuda. Usuwal wszystko, ze skora wlacznie. Ale akurat wtedy potrzebowalam czegos takiego, aby doprowadzic moja cere do porzadku. Niestety, potem juz nie moglam go regularnie uzywac.
Zostal wiec przeniesiony do peelingowania innych czesci ciala. I kurcze, wow! Moja skora dostala nowe zycie. Tak, nawet w miejscach, gdzie wisi mi celulit. Czyli, moje eksperymenty peelingujace sie oplacily. Pan domu potwierdza.

And speaking of Det Clear, I can't ignore their wonderful, wonderful peeling gels. I have two of them. I started my adventure with enzymatic peeling gels by trying a cult gel by House of Rose. It worked great, maybe even too great. It peeled of everything, skin included. And while it did help me during my most troublesome skin times, it proved much too harsh for regular use. However, I used it on my body and wow! Simply wow! My skin was glowing. And because I like to experiment, I decided to try it on my worst cellulite affected areas. And while, of course, it couldn't simply remove the crud, it did make the skin look better. A lot better.

I to wlasnie w tym momencie powiedzialam "sayonara" do drobinkowych zdzierakow. Nie widze potrzeby ich uzywania. Sa za ostre, za duzo po nich szorowania lazienki. Uzywam teraz zelow peelingujacych na calym ciele.

And that was the moment when I said goodbye to harsh sugar or coffee or salt or whatever based exfoliating products and started to use peeling gels exclusively. On my entire body. And I must say, I'm extremely pleased with the results.

Ale wracajac do zelow Det Clear, sa one lagodne do regularnego uzywania (ja robie raz na tydzien), nie wysuszaja skory (jak to w ogole mozliwe, biorac pod uwage ich dzialanie?), i choc ich zapach nie jest dla kazdego, mozna przywyknac. Za taka cene (w zaleznosci od sklepu od 1000 do 1400 jenow), to swietne produkty.

So what about those Det Clear gels? They are gentle enough to be used on my face about once a week, they don't dry out the skin (how is that even possible, considering what they do???), and while the scent could be better, they are a really good product at a very affordable price.

Jak mozna zobaczyc na zdjeciu powyzej, zele sa przezroczyste i nie maja w sobie zadnych drobinek. Wystarczy wycisnac mala ilosc (i naprawde nie potrzeba tego duzo), i delikatnie masowac na sucha skore (tak! na sucha). Po kilku sekundach (lub dluzej, jak w przypadku bardzo delikatnego zelu Atom), konsystencja zamieni sie w wiorki. Te wiorki to zrolowany zel, plus martwy naskorek, wagry, zaskorniaki, sebum i brud.

Wystarczy splukac woda. Potem lotion (toner, softener), lub sheet maska (ja tak robie) i gotowe. Piekna, czysta, rozjasniona i niesamowicie gladka cera jako rezultat.

As you can see above, the gels are clear and contain no harsh particles whatsoever. You squeeze a small amount (and really, a small amount goes a long way!) and gently massage onto dry (yes, dry!) skin. After a few seconds (can take a bit longer with super gentle gels, like Atom), the gel will transform into white shreds taking with it your dead skin cells, sebum, blackheads and dirt. You rinse your skin with water, apply lotion (toner, softener) or a sheet mask, and voila! Clean, bright, incredibly smooth skin is yours.

Mam rowniez jeden koreanski zel peelingujacy, z linii dla cery wrazliwej od Atom Skincare. Choc to nie do konca zel peelingujacy. Cos pomiedzy zelem peelingujacym, a cleanserem. Niesamowicie delikatny. To trzeba sprobowac, aby uwierzyc. Ja kupilam wersje dla wrazliwej skory. I zaluje teraz, ze nie kupilam calej linii, ale nie nalezala do najtanszych, a ja nie bardzo bylam sklonna wydac tyle kasy na cos o czym nigdy nie slyszalam.

I also have one Korean peeling gel - from Atom Skincare. Though, really, I hesitate to label it as such. It's more of a facial cleanser, which can also act as a peeling gel if left on the face long enough. It's so incredibly gentle you have to try it to believe it. I have a "sensitive skin" version. I regret I didn't buy the entire line, but they weren't the cheapest and I was very hesitant to spend that much money on something I've never heard of before.

Wiec dlaczego te enzymatyczne zele peelingujace sa tak popularne w Azji?
Zapewne dlatego, ze moga byc uzywane niemal na co dzien (niemal jest tutaj slowem kluczowym). Ekspertki od siedmiu bolesci twierdza, ze Azjatki nie uzywaja peelingow z drobinkami na twarzy, ba! nawet twierdza, ze takowych tutaj nie ma. To oczywiscie bzdura. Takie peelingi jak najbardziej tu istnieja i kiedy zachodzi taka potrzeba, sa uzywane. Ale nie sa one az tak popularne jak AHA / BHA kosmetyki i delikatne zele peelingujace.
Osobiscie, nie moge sobie wyobrazic uzywania zdzieraka na twarzy. I teraz rowniez na reszcie ciala. Takie zdzieraki trzymam tylko i wylacznie na potrzeby moich nosorozcowych stop.

Why are enzymatic peeling gels so popular in Asia?
It probably has to do with the fact that they are gentle enough to be safely used on a regular basis. Some  "experts" will tell you that there are no facial scrubs using microdermabrasion (gritty exfoliators) in Japan, because they damage the skin's surface and Japanese women won't use them.
That's utter nonsense, of course. Such scrubs do exist and they are used under certain circumstances by Japanese women. But yes, they are not as popular as AHA / BHA treatments and gentle peeling gels.

Personally I can't imagine using a gritty scrub on my face. And now also on my body. I reserve such harsh exfoliating products for my rhino feet.

Nie uzywam tez szczotki do twarzy. Kiedys tam sprobowalam i doszlam do wniosku, ze to nie dla mnie. Moja pani dermatolog, jak i kosmetyczka, sa calkowicie przeciwne szczotkom do twarzy. Twierdza, ze na dluzsza mete uzywanie szczotki uszkadza i niszczy cere, a wiec tym samym przyspiesza proces starzenia. A ja nie chce sie starzec. Tak wiec dlugofalowe efekty sa ponoc zupelnie odmienne od zamierzonych.

Czego wiec uzywam? Czystych dloni. Pianka (lub zel) idzie na dlonie i potem delikatnie (delikatnie to slowo kluczowe tutaj) masuje twarz. Splukuje przy uzyciu mieciutkiej szmatki do mycia, i osuszam papierowym recznikiem. Szmatka laduje w pralce, a papierowy recznik w koszu.
Tak, za kazdym razem jak myje twarz, uzywam czystej myjki do splukania.
I nigdy nie uzywam zwyklego recznika do wytarcia. Jak nie mam papierowego recznika pod reka, to chusteczka higieniczna da rade. W ekstremalnych warunkach twarz schnie sama.

I don't use a brush to wash my face. Once upon a time, I did try it and decided it wasn't for me. Both my dermatologist and my esthe lady (beautician) are firmly against face brushes. They claim that regular long-term brush use damages the skin and speeds up the aging process. And aging is what I want to avoid, hahaha!
I use my hands to apply the foam (or the gel) and gently (and this is the key word here - gently) massage my face. I rinse using a soft washcloth and dry the skin dry using a paper towel. The washcloth goes into the washing machine and the paper towel into the wastebasket.
Yes, I use a clean washcloth every time I rinse my face. And I never use a regular towel to dry my face. When I don't have a paper towel handy, I use facial tissue. Or in extreme circumstances, I let my face dry naturally.

Dlaczego to robie? Ze wzgledow higienicznych.

Mialam kiedys najgorszy tradzik pod sloncem. Jako osoba dorosla. Moja twarz byla pokryta ropiejacymi, gigantycznymi wypryskami. Wagry i zaskorniaki krolowaly na moim nosie. I tam gdzie nie bylo ropnych syfow, mialam wysypy malych, bialych wypryskow. Nie ma slow, aby opisac jak okropnie wygladalam.
Pomoglo mi leczenie antybiotykami, doustnymi i na skore. I jednym z zalecen dermatologa bylo, aby natychmiast odstawic normalny recznik i osuszac twarz papierowym recznikiem. Nie wycierac, ale wlasnie osuszac. Polozyc papier na twarzy i wilgoc sama miala sie wchlonac. Zero wycierania, zero poklepywania, zero czegokolwiek.

Why do I do it? For hygiene.

I used to have the world's worst acne. Adult acne. Huge, red, puss-filled zits covered my entire face. There was a colony of blackheads on my nose and smaller, white bumps everywhere else. There are no words to describe how horrible I looked.
What helped me was a 6-month antibiotic treatment, both topical and oral. And one of my doctor's instructions was to immediately stop using regular cloth towels to dry my face. She forced me to use only disposable paper tissue, and only in a certain way - to spread it on my face and let it absorb the moisture. Zero patting, zero rubbing, zero wiping.

Pozbycie sie tego doroslego tradziku zajelo mi dlugi czas. Ale pewne nawyki zostaly, w tym rowniez papierowa rutyna do osuszania twarzy.
Byly okazje kiedy wrocilam do zwyklych recznikow (czystych! zmienianych codziennie), ale wtedy wrocily tez problemy skorne. Wiec papierowe reczniki zagoscily w mojej lazience na stale.

Mam fiola na punkcie mojej cery, przyznaje sie bez bicia.

I to jest koniec mojego cleansingowego rytualu.

It took a long time to get rid of my adult acne. And even after the treatment, the paper routine became so ingrained that I continued to do it.

Every once in a while I would revert to using a normal towel, and as if by some black magic, my skin would get worse. And so paper towels are back in my life for good.

Yes, I am a bit strange like that.

And that concludes my daily cleansing ritual.
